Can’t Attend NAB Show This Year? Here’s the Next Best Thing…

Tony Reale and Matt Jeppsen are the masterminds behind NextWave DV and Fresh DV and they've teamed up to bring as much insider access and filmmaking perspective to NAB Show 2012 as possible.

Every year around springtime, gear-heads and camera geeks descend into a veritable melting pot of cinematic arts, industrialized equipment, and overall debauchery for the National Association of Broadcasters’ NAB Show.

I’ve never been, but I hear it’s quite the week — full of new products, demos, and the smells of machinery. You can bet that every manufacturer with a chip in the filmmaking game is saving up their biggest announcements for this week.

And while I won’t be at the show this year (I’ve never been, actually), I’m turning to the talented crews at NextWaveDV and FreshDV for their coverage of NAB 2012.

It’s basically the next best thing to holding each new camera yourself.

The Best NAB Show 2012 Coverage

Tony Reale and Matt Jeppsen are the masterminds behind NextWave DV and Fresh DV and they’ve teamed up to bring as much insider access and filmmaking perspective to NAB Show 2012 as possible.

I can’t think of two guys whose opinion I trust more on the topics: Tony Reale is constantly churning out quality videos on his site with a warm, welcoming perspective. And Matt Jeppsen’s Fresh DV has always been a favorite blog of mine — plus he’s had experience camera assisting, meaning his viewpoint will cover both the creative and practical aspects of gear.

Throughout the week, Tony and Matt will be updating a YouTube playlist (embedded above) with new videos that cover everything from opinions to interviews to straight camera porn.

While I’m not typically a gear-head, nor do I necessarily enjoy all the exaggerations that often come from a show like this, I do like to see what cameras, products, and other news comes out of NAB because it’s a glimpse at what new gear I’ll have to learn throughout the year.

Still, I urge you to take all these announcements with a grain of salt (anyone who says “game-changer” will be blacklisted!) while enjoying the excitement and atmosphere of transformation that is omnipresent at NAB Show.

Stepping down off my soap box now…

Enjoy the coverage and thanks to NextWave DV and Fresh DV for their excellent work!

As the week continues to unfold, it’d be awesome if you could share your thoughts in the comments below. I’ll be actively participating with my opinion on announcements and would like to hear yours too!

"Red Herring" Official Trailer

"Red Herring" is a Las Vegas based independent film produced by Cohencidence Productions that I worked on back in October as the First Assistant Camera for a talented cinematographer and good friend, Kunitaro Ohi. It's a film that's shoot was as grueling as it was rewarding - nothing worth doing comes easy, I suppose.

Version 5.0 of The Black and Blue is Live!

In spite of the long breaks that I've taken from this site, it continues to find an audience and help camera assistants around the world. It's amazing. And because so many of these people reach out to me, I've always made sure The Black and Blue was hosted on a fast web server and made continually accessible. But a refresh has been long overdue.
