Harrison Ford is Bad at Pulling Focus

Harrison Ford is Bad at Pulling Focus

Did you know Indiana Jones himself was once the man behind the camera? This week I found out Harrison Ford was once on the crew of a film shoot before hitting it big as Han Solo in Star Wars.

But it gets even more interesting, Ford wasn’t just on the crew, he was a camera assistant. And it wasn’t on some random film shoot either.

It turns out Harrison Ford was the 2nd Assistant camera on a documentary film that followed legendary rock band The Doors throughout their tour.

Sounds glamorous, but Ford doesn’t really remember it as such: “I couldn’t keep up with those guys. It was too much. I was part of the camera crew — second camera. I don’t think any of it was in focus, not a bit of it”

It’s cool to know that Ford was a camera assistant and as terrible at pulling focus as many of us are when we first start out. Maybe he could’ve used some help on certain focus pulling mistakes.

It was on an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live that Ford admitted all of this, though the knowledge is well-documented in several biographies.

Here is some footage from one of the concerts Ford was filming. At 1:50 into the video you can spot Ford in the crowd changing a magazine on his camera:

The film Ford was working on never ended up getting a release. The actor himself hasn’t even seen any footage and made a plea to get a chance to view the unfinished film, “Boy, that would be some great stuff to see.”

The star also added, “I barely remember anything.”

Looks like we know whether or not Ford decided to grab a few drinks with the band after wrap.

Happy Labor Day: The Film Industry Should Treat Crew Better

Today is Labor Day in the United States and, as we recognize this national holiday dedicated to the achievements of the American workforce, it's important to acknowledge that the crew in the film industry – the labor – hold more skill, talent, and power than is being recognized and rewarded.
