James Cameron and the Pace 3D Camera Rig on G4

James Cameron and the Pace 3D Camera Rig on G4 (Video)

On G4's Attack of the Show, James Cameron appeared for a segment highlighting the 3D rig him and Vince Pace developed for Avatar. On the show, Cameron explains the rig and goes into detail on why he believes side-by-side lens configurations are wrong and explains some of the more minute details of the cameras' operations.

The rig is unsurprisingly similar to the one for Scorsese and Michael Bay set up by Vince Pace that uses the Arri Alexa.

For those who aren’t aware, James Cameron and Vince Pace spent a good deal of time perfecting their beam-splitter 3D rig before shooting Avatar. They shot underwater documentaries and other small side projects as an audition for the cameras before delving into the massive feature project that Avatar became. It’s part of the reason that Cameron spent so much time in between Titanic and Avatar. Now, Pace and Cameron are the go-to guys for shooting in the third dimension and this video shows why: Cameron is extremely competent and comfortable with the technology.
