ARRI Alexa During Camera Prep

Arri Alexa 2.1 Software Update Released

ARRI has released a new software update for their flagship digital cinema camera. Among its top features, the camera is now able to record up to 60 frames per second on SxS cards in ProRes. The rest of the update is devoted to bug fixes and cleaning up an otherwise great camera.

Though 60fps in ProRes has been enabled for SxS recording, it is limited to only 40fps at ProRes 4:4:4 due to the increased quality and data factor. This update should be welcome to many digital cinema filmmakers, including now converted Roger Deakins, who may have gotten used to DSLR’s or RED cameras that can shoot Varispeed with ease to compact flash cards.

Despite already being used to shoot in 3D, the 2.1 software update for the Alexa also allows precise syncing and a master/slave camera mode with a new cable kit from Arri. This should make beam-splitter 3D filming, like what James Cameron uses, a heck of a lot easier for those utilizing the tech.

The new software is available to download for Alexa users at Arri’s website and is easily installed on the camera via SD card. Unfortunately the release notes are not available to unregistered users and a serial number is required to register in the first place. The good news is, however, the menu maps should remain the same.
