So You Want to Work in Movies?
You love movies, but have the faintest idea of how to end up on a film set and nobody is making it easy for you.
Everyday hundreds of people fresh out of film school, high school, or who simply want a career change attempt to break into the film industry. What they quickly find out is that it isn’t easy.
The film industry seems to operate inside of a walled-garden: unwelcoming to those on the outside while bearing fruits of labor to those on the inside.
And this mentality is intimidating when you’re first starting out.
The standard job search sites and classified sections list very few, if any, film jobs. Your friends and family, while they support you, have the same perceptions of the industry as you with no unique viewpoint to share. And even though you studied film in school, they don’t teach you how to get a job, let alone freelance gigs.
Plus, when you do manage to get a peek inside the mysterious filmmaking machine, everybody seems to be doing jobs you were never told about. Grips? Best Boys? Camera Assistants?
You have no clue what those vague job titles mean and what the work entails. You hear horror stories of production assistants (PAs) being yelled at for coffee, yelled at by actors, and abused by crew. You realize that working in film isn’t a haven for job security.
And after you consider all of these fears, intimidations, anxieties, apprehension, and dismay, you can’t help but wonder: “How does anybody make a living doing this?”
If you’re reading this, then I imagine you want the satisfaction of making a movie and working in the camera department.
Well, I’m here to help you do that.
I can promise to help you get your foot in the door, but you have to promise you’re willing to do what it takes to get there.
